Live art comes to Leith Street
Local muralist Chris Rutterford will be a guest star in the branch’s Leith Street windows throughout next week.
Chris will be creating a ‘Christmas card to Edinburgh ‘ as a series of panels in one of the Leith Street windows. As he completes the panels, he will mount them in the Cafe on level 4 so that they form a Christmas card mural for customers to enjoy.
Chris believes that the creation of art can be theatre in itself so he films himself working and then edits the time lapse footage into a short film of him producing his work. You can check out his previous work at chrisrutterford.com
“We are hoping the mural will capture our customers ‘ imaginations and they will make the trip to the Cafe to see the full work having seen Chris in the windows,” said Kirsty Knust, PR & Marketing Co-ordinator. “We will be sending update to the Joh Lewis Twitter account every day so that all of our customers can follow Chris’ progress. Once the mural is completed, we can load the film onto the customer Facebook page so that they can watch the mural unfold. “
Chris will work in the window from tomorrow, Saturday 24 November, until Friday 30 November and will then move up to the Furniture department on level 4 to complete the final panel over the weekend of Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 December. The ‘Christmas card’ will be complete before the branch closes on Sunday 2 December.
“Barry asked Chris to make the mural very specific to Edinburgh,” added Kirsty, “so look out for some well known buildings and maybe some well known faces!”
