Great week this week working in beautiful Peebles @kailziebiglodge painting a stairwell into a mountain biking and nature themed mural for their new upmarket bunkhouse. The basic idea was that when the humans leave, the animals don their helmets and start pedalling.

The Nature mural I have created for Braidburn Valley Park`s Friends with the advanced higher pupils from Firrhill High School is now complete!

Some of the artists came down yesterday to see the finished article.
Seen here with their own animals., the detail on the mural is brilliant.
I designed it to have impact from a distance but layers of joy up close.

Delighted how well this is being received by visitors , it is already becoming a joyful focal point for the park.
I love it that little kids and their parents are being irresistibly drawn up the hill for a closer look. Not to mention dog walkers and all!

The owl at the front looks like a stage now.

The Jolly Beggars -.. Another illustration for the Robert Burns chess board booklet.
The poem takes place on a drunken night of debauchery in an inn and focuses around a series of characters who take it in turns to speak.
A maimed soldier turned beggar, his lover doxy a buxom female pickpocket, a pigmy fiddler and a tinker - all on a wild night of drinking.
This was a lot of fun to paint- the main thing was to make sure it felt like the characters had sunk a shandy or two!

New feature wall for Malones Edinburgh based around their new Triple Cask Irish Whiskey.
The Celtic deer and intricate woodland scene is core to their brand .

I painted the deer in this malty orange palette as though it has a fire in its belly.
Like it’s just knocked back a large dram and is eyeing up another.

It was really fun to paint something full of detail and interest but also really clean and legible.

This mural is pretty much complete now - I think my favourite bit is the otter French kissing a trout in the wetland section.

One of the real challenges in the tunnel was the start.
How to transition from the opening of the poem full of fairies and witches and almost instantly into a section that represented the long military involvement in the area within a few meters?

The challenge was to maintain the whimsy and momentum of RLS poem whilst creating a thoughtful
And reverential feeling in the military section.

The solution i came up with was in the field of poppies painted by multiple hands - but also in a new gang of forest animals leading into the poppies and onto a lone piper to bring pathos and music to the scene, and a second train carrying the troops away from Colinton and onward toward their destiny.

As a little extra, hidden in amongst the foliage a fairy pulls a little magic along the tunnel from the start and into the threshold of the poppies.
